Rørvikfjellet: Moulded Motion.
Approaching the site one experiences a sensation of lift-off. The bend in the road creates a situation where the landscape opens up and unfolds on an enormous scale. This produces a feeling of anti-gravity and a natural desire to follow through with the motion of the approach and literally take off into the vast spatiality of the landscape.
This dominant experience is the basis for the architectural concept. The simple objective of the design is to take up and complete the motion that is already integral to the natural site. This continuation manifests in different ways: primarily the ramp that extends out into the void of the topographic space is a fulfilment of the lift-off that the approach promises. But the architecture will also form a continuation of the movements and curvature of the road itself by aligning with the road and organising the pedestrian motions of the place in accordance with the traffic.
The architecture also underlines the special character of the place in terms of materiality and design details. This entails continuity at the same time as the architecture creates definite and unmistakable transitions so that the visitors’ facility stands forth as a concentrated and precise construction that allows for intuitive usage and thus contributes to a richer experience of the natural site.
